The NeuroLogical Levels
The neurological levels are one of the most fascinating maps
that have been developed in NLP. Robert Dilts coined them
fairly early in the history of NLP, and they have had a
tremendous influence in diverse areas including the cure of
ailments, spiritual fulfillment, habits at the identity level, state
change, belief change, and much much more.
Let's walk through the levels. They are
1) Environment: The physical world around a person.
2) Behavior: The reactions people have to stimuli in the
world, states, emotions, and external behaviors. Change at
this level is relatively straightforward, but can be
powerful
3) Capabilities: This is a person's strategies, thoughts, and skills.
4) Beliefs: This is filters a person uses to perceive the world, filters
or phrases that are important building blocks in a person's reality. For
example, "I'm stupid" or "I can do anything". They are the foundation
for filtering reality.
5) Identity: Now we're getting into a level that is more abstract. It
includes who the person is and the key elements
that make up a person's identity and core. Mission and
Purpose in this world is at this level. The question to elicit this
level can start with the words, "Who..."
6) Spiritual: This level is about what a person is a part of that is
greater than themselves, How they are related to God, their higher
power, etc. Change at this level is powerful and effects all other
levels.
A change at any higher level permeates the levels below it like a
trickle-down effect. For example, if a person changes
a subconscious belief from "I'm not worthy" To "I'm very
worthy", it effects their skills, behaviors, and the person's
relationship to their environment.
Most of the first fifteen days of NLP training, the practitioner
training, focus on the behavioral level. Capabilities are also looked
at, and even beliefs. However, the identity and spiritual level change
is mostly taught in advanced trainings.
It's interesting how well this map works, for if a change
doesn't work, the coach or trainer simply moves up a level
and revisits the issue with an increasing amount of success.
The higher neurological levels also incorporate more of the
neurology in a person's brain.
Most beliefs are formed when we are children, and changing
less than resourceful beliefs to be very resourceful can be
a life-changing event. Also, it is surprising how many people's outcomes
are at the behavioral level, and are relatively easy to work with.
Robert Dilts' neurological levels are a core tool in the toolbox of NLP
practitioners, and are a map for change and growth. Changes at the
spiritual, identity, and belief levelalter the lower levels as well.
This is a map of a human being, effective and useful, truly a gift to
those who are out there producing change and results in this world.
