Anchoring
The exploration of anchoring began with Pavlov, and has
grown into a successful NLP tool that is a technique in itself at the
behavioral level, and is used as part of techniques at higher
neurological levels. Pavlov anchored the stimulus of the bell to the
response of salivation.
Anchoring is providing a stimulus to create a response. When
an NLP practitioner is working with a client, an anchor
sometimes used is a three finger press on the client's arm when they are
in a resource state. Anchor's can also be
visual or auditory.
An example of a natural auditor anchor is a favorite song
that elicits all sorts of memories and feelings when heard.
A natural visual anchor could be a gesture done by a
significant other, or the response you get from your favorite color.
Some elements that define an anchor are
1) If they are unique
2) Successful repetition of the anchor
3) The purity of the state
4) The timing of the anchor when established
Anchoring is such a common occurrence that is truly a shift
to become aware of the different stimulus and responses that
drive our psyche. Day in and day out, we run strategies that
are anchored sequences and we have emotions in response to what we
experience in daily life. A part of NLP is becoming
aware of your own anchors and re-sequencing them when they are creating
less than desired results.
Spacial anchoring is another very powerful method. A natural
example of spacial anchoring might be the state you go into
when sitting in your favorite chair, or the experiences that
come forth when you sit down to test a nice new car that you
want to buy.
Anchoring is used in many powerful NLP processes to assist
in curing allergies, to do reimprinting with a childhood trauma or
issue, to alter a strategy, even visual anchors to align the person at
all neurological levels. Anchors are utilized in one way or another in
most NLP processes.
Anchoring is a key tool in the toolbox of an NLP practitioner, and it is
surprising how many anchors we
utilize day in and day out. Whether making a change at the
behavioral level, or at the spiritual level, anchoring is
useful. It provides a way to utilize and stablize a resource
state, a key tool in powerful change.
